Calgary, AB - The University of Calgary Dinos were defeated 5-3 by the Mount Royal University Cougars on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.
The Dinos surrendered four unanswered goals in the third period after taking a 3-1 lead into the final frame. With two losses this weekend, the Dinos now sit at 4-10 on the season, while the Cougars improved to 8-6.
"Our discipline isn't where we need it to be and it's losing us hockey games. That's the bottom line," explained Dinos captain, Kevin King. "We have to stay out of the box and capitalize on our opportunities."
The Cougars drew first blood on the power play when Matthew Brown's back door pass found Cam Maclise whose one-timer beat Dinos goaltender, Myles Hovdebo. With just over a minute remaining in the opening 20 minutes, the Dinos answered back with a power play tally of their own.
Collins won the draw back to Dryden Dow who hit Franson with a cross-ice pass. Franson's point shot deflected off of a Mount Royal defender and found the back of the net to make it a 1-1 tie go into the middle frame.
The Dinos took their first lead of the game at 16:21 of the second period a Mount Royal pass deflected off of Spencer Edwards' skate and straight to Elgin Pearce coming out of the box. Pearce took off on a breakaway and beat Cougars' netminder high blocker side to give the Dinos a 2-1 advantage.
Calgary added to their lead on the power play less than a minute later, when a pass from Coda Gordon found Dylan Walchuk in front who beat Cooper on the backhand to make it a 3-1 game going into the third.
The Cougars' comeback started early in the third as a breakaway goal from Brown put the Cougars within one 16 seconds in. With the Dinos running into some penalty trouble, Mount Royal forward Cam Maclise scored twice in 30 seconds both with a two man advantage and again on the remaining penalty, to put them ahead 4-3.
"They came out with more jump and they got out to a quick start with their second goal, more mentally than anything, they were ready to go and we weren't," said King.
In the final minute with the Dinos on the power play and the goaltender out for an extra attacker, Cougars' forward Tyler Fiddler fired the puck from inside his own blueline into the empty net to give his team a 5-3 victory.
The Cougars travel to Saskatoon next weekend to take on the University of Saskatchewan Nov. 27-28.The Dinos look to get back in the win column at home next weekend against the UBC Thunderbirds, Nov. 27-28.
