Calgary- After a stunning Friday night overtime tilt, both Cougars squads gathered back at Flames Community Arena for game two of their weekend series.
Coming off another Friday loss, Mount Royal prepared for another fierce battle with Regina, who looked to put together back-to-back wins for the first time this year.
Mount Royal appeared to have turned the page on yesterday's game, firing on all cylinders just minutes into the first period.
MRU's newfound jump remained visible until the midway point of the first when Connor Bouchard took the game's first penalty, sending Regina onto a power play.Â
It was déja vu for the green and yellow, who made quick work of the man advantage as Regina product Eric Pearse potted his first of the weekend, giving the visitors an early lead.
Soon after, Mount Royal returned to the penalty kill as Vaughn Watterodt found himself in the box; however, this time around, MRU managed to survive Regina's red-hot power play.Â
Finally returning to even strength, MRU set up shop in Damon Cunningham's end of the rink with former Canada West MVP Connor Bouchard leading the charge.
Through his relentless pursuit, Bouchard found an opening and fed fellow former MVP Clay Hanus for MRU's first of the game and Hanus's first of the season.
3 minutes later, it was Bouchard again conducting the offence, scoring on a wrist shot from the blue line, putting Mount Royal up by one.
For the first time this weekend, the home Cougars exited period 1 with a lead, with aspirations of adding to it in the second frame.
Despite several great looks, MRU couldn't solve Cunningham, who returned to the form that he showcased the night before.
Regina was outmatched for most of the 2nd and could not conjure up any scoring chances outside of a Paycen Bjorklund breakaway that Ethan Buenaventura shut down.Â
Through two periods of play, MRU's one-goal lead stayed intact with Regina on their heels.
Refusing to sit back and defend in the third, Mount Royal turned up the tempo, hemming Regina in their zone and clawing closer to extending their lead.Â
At the halfway mark of the 3rd, Josh Tarzwell finally broke through, sniping a wicked wrist shot top corner, giving MRU a two-goal cushion with limited time remaining.Â
Unable to construct any sort of setup in MRU territory, Regina recorded just a single shot in the third, largely due to Mount Royal's relentless offensive attack.
All MRU needed was 24 hours to recover from a devastating loss as they finished off Regina on home ice, taking Saturday's bout 3-1.
Heading into next weekend, Mount Royal will look to replicate their Saturday success when it clashes with the Trinity Western Spartans at Flames Community Arena, a team they have fared well against in the past.
