MRU - The Mount Royal Cougars welcomed the University of Calgary Dinos to Stadium Field on Saturday afternoon for a Senior Day matchup, with both teams playing their final regular-season game before turning their attention to the playoffs. Before kickoff, the Cougars honoured graduating seniors Hyunsoo Ryu, Skyler Rogers, Jonathan Walter, Valentin Kirchner, goalkeeper Sjard Strauss and Alex Kemsley for their contributions to the program throughout their collegiate careers.
The match opened with a physical, back-and-forth battle, with few scoring chances for either side in the early stages of the first half. Mount Royal faced a setback in the 25th minute when Alex Kemsley was shown a red card, forcing the Cougars to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match. Calgary looked to capitalize on its numerical advantage, with fifth-year defender William Omoreniye testing the Mount Royal defence late in the half. The Cougars stood firm through the closing minutes, keeping the Dinos off the scoresheet to send the match into halftime tied 0-0.
The second half resumed with the same intensity, as Mount Royal and Calgary traded shots and fouls in a physical battle for control. Calgary broke the deadlock in the 65th minute when Omoreniye delivered a cross into the box for fifth-year defender Jacob Hunter, who headed home to give the Dinos a 1-0 lead.
Mount Royal responded three minutes later when forward Bwidju Mutongolo delivered a corner kick into the box, finding graduating senior Valentin Kirchner, who finished to level the match at 1-1 and mark his Senior Day with an equalizer.
Both sides continued to search for a late winner, but neither could find the breakthrough in the closing minutes. Despite playing a man down for most of the match, Mount Royal held firm defensively to secure a 1-1 draw against the Dinos in its final regular-season matchup before the playoffs.
Player of the Game: #19 Valentin Kirchner who scored the Cougars' lone goal in their 1-1 draw against the Calgary Dinos, finding the equalizer on his Senior Day.
