MSOC - It was a cold and rainy afternoon for some soccer on Sunday as the Mount Royal Cougars hosted the Lethbridge Pronghorns at Stadium Field. The Cougars looked to add another win to their season total against a Lethbridge team coming off a 2-0 shutout win against the University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday night.
Â
Both teams demonstrated their poise early on in this one, trading possession in the attacking half and creating several scoring opportunities. Cougars fifth-year forward
Skyler Rogers looked eager to find the back of the net and capitalized on an opportunity in the 11th minute, putting MRU ahead 1-0.
Â
Rogers wouldn't stop there, finding the back of the net again just three minutes later in the 14th minute. Second-year defender
Joseph Green provided a beautiful feed to Rogers, who finished the chance to extend the Cougars' lead to 2-0 early in the match. The Pronghorns looked to cut into their deficit before the half, but MRU held onto its two-goal cushion heading into halftime.
Â
Mount Royal would not slow down coming out of the halftime break, continuing to apply pressure on the Pronghorns. That pressure would pay off in the 50th minute, as Green would find the back of the net to add to his assist earlier in the match and extend the Cougars' lead to 3-0.
Â
Lethbridge searched for an answer following three unanswered goals from MRU and began applying pressure of its own, led by third-year defender Kyle Boell. The Pronghorns created several opportunities, but Cougars' goaltender
Sjard Strauss stood strong to keep Lethbridge off the scoresheet.
Â
The Pronghorns would finally find the back of the net in the 64th minute, as third-year forward Leo Kadezabek capitalized on Lethbridge's offensive pressure to score his first goal of the season.
Lethbridge would continue to search for another goal, but Mount Royal held strong and maintained its two-goal lead to secure a 3-1 victory. With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-2-1 on the season.
Â
The Cougars will be back at Stadium Field next Saturday to host the MacEwan University Griffins, while the Pronghorns will host the Alberta Golden Bears.
