Mount Royal scores four straight and sweep the weekend series against Regina

Box Score

CALGARY – Jamal Watson scored two goals and added an assist as Mount Royal completed the weekend sweep of the Regina Cougars, Saturday afternoon at Flames Community Arenas.

Jamal Watson (2), Luke Simpson, Connor Rankin, Taylor Green and Devin Gannon all lit the lamp for the Cougars in the 6-2 victory.

It was Regina who opened the scoring early in today's matinee affair. After Jamal Watson and Connor Rankin couldn't convert on a quick 2-on-1, Regina brought it back the other way with a 2-on-1 of their own. Logan Harland flipped a saucer pass over to Ian McNulty who one-timed it into the middle of the net, giving Regina their first lead of the weekend, just 25 seconds into the game.

Regina added their lead just four minutes later. They sustained some good pressure in the Mount Royal zone and worked the cycle low into the corner. The puck squirted out to the point and Tyler Bell stepped into a slap shot, ripping it top corner past Colin Cooper.

Mount Royal was quick to answer on the power play. After some sloppy initial touches, the Cougars settled down and started working it around. Connor Rankin grabbed the puck on the left side and faked a slap shot. Rankin then zipped it over to a streaking Luke Simpson. Simpson fanned on the shot but the pass was so sharp the momentum carried the puck past Kilgore and over the line.

Jamal Watson tied the game at 9:43 mark with a beautiful individual effort. Watson took the puck from Zack Henry on his own side of center and turned on the jets. With ease, Watson walked around the Regina defender, cut sharply across the goalmouth and deposited his fifth of the year into the far side of the goal.

Watson got his second of the game on another brilliant cut across the crease. After a scramble in front of the net, Watson grabbed the puck on the side of the goal and used his long reach to stuff it past Kilgore, giving Mount Royal their first lead of the game.

Connor Rankin got in on the action just 30 seconds into the third, extending Mount Royal's lead to two. Brett Zarazun had a beautiful individual effort, walking in off the blue line until it was just he and the goalie. Instead of taking it himself, Zarazun saw Rankin sneaking in off the wall and slid the pass over. All Rankin had to do was tap it into the empty net.

Taylor Green scored his first career Canada West goal with just over a minute left to play. Devin Gannon added one more to solidify the 6-2 victory for Mount Royal.

Mount Royal improves to 7-3-0 with the victory. Regina drops their regular season record to 1-9-0.

Regina will head back home and settle in before hosting UBC for two games at the Co-operator's Centre. The first game goes Friday night at 7pm CST.

The Cougars will have a home and home series with the Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend. They will travel down the highway for a 7pm MST start on Friday night before returning home on Saturday for a 6pm MST puck drop.
