REGINA, Sask. - The University of Regina and Mount Royal University women's soccer teams scrapped to a 1-1 draw in the battle of the Cougars on Sunday afternoon.
The first half was an intense battle with numerous scoring chances by both teams, but it was the home Cougars that struck first after a corner kick from Brianna Wright.
Wright sent a strong cross into the box in the 27th minute and Daniela Castro got the first touch on the ball. Her initial attempt at net was stopped by keeper Megan Prudhomme, but the rebound popped up in the air and Castro headed it in to give the home team the lead.
The visitors would respond in the 68th minute as the ball was sent in nicely from the left wing by midfielder
Kelsey Kinzner. Kinzner's pass was deflected by
Navroop Virk, under Savannah Williams who had come out to challenge. Virk's second of the Canada West season knotted the match at 1-1.
The second half showed a change of pace from both teams, with the game turning into a defensive battle. Only four of the Regina's 15 shots came in the second period, while six of Mount Royal's 21 came after the break. Each team had nine shots on net for the game.
With the draw, the Cougars record now sits at 1-3-2. Mount Royal moves to 1-4-1.
Regina will head to British Columbia next weekend for matches against UBC and Victoria.
