Cougars draw a tie in final regular season game, 1-1 against UBCO

Calgary, ALTA. — With Friday night's chilly temperatures in the rear view, Mount Royal University's women's soccer team hosted the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. This matchup marked the Cougars' last regular season game that would end in a draw of 1-1.

In the 8th minute, the Cougars had some pressure at centrefield which led to a pass for Dany Juarez. Juarez raced towards the net and sent a tight right hand corner shot that was picked up by UBCO's goalie Talia Gagnon.

During the 11th minute, the UBCO Heat players were attempting to get the ball out of their defensive end but the ball was stripped from UBCO possession. This led Ruby Szautner to kick the ball towards the net where two defenders did not see Madeleine Albert coming in from their left side. Albert would send the ball with ease into the net to create the first goal of the game for the Cougars.

Ella Filek was ready for the action as a Heat player kicked the ball in just past midfield where Megan Sun headed the ball towards Sydney Kolodziej. Juarez applied pressure on Kolodziej as the two quickly approached Filek. Kolodziej took a tight shot on the right hand corner that was easily saved by Filek.

In the late seconds of the 15th minute, Gagnon came out of her net in an attempt to scoop up the ball but Tamara Djurisic was able to dribble it past the hands of the goalie. Djurisic then slid across the grass and missed the left goal post by a hair, keeping the score at 1-0.

In the 35th minute, Filek came out of the net and slide tackled Sun's shot attempt. This was a successful block but the ball rebounded off of Filek, leaving the ball loose for Sun to have another try on net. As Filek was still getting up, Siddaly Alcock provided cover to block Sun's final shot attempt and regain Cougars possession.

The Cougars continued to apply pressure to the Heat, which caused a turnover, where Gabrielle Linford was able to take the ball down centrefield. Linford flicked the ball over to Djurisic for a one-on-one matchup with the goalie but the fast reflexes of Gagnon blocked Djurisic's shot, keeping the Cougars to 1-0.

Filek made another save in the 56th minute as Sophia Eiley found a loose ball and took a shot at the net.

In the 63rd minute, UBCO Heat had a corner kick by Abigail Taneda which found Sophie Campbell to head the ball past Filek, making it a tie game of 1-1.

During the 75th minute, a Cougars steal found Djurisic sending a long shot that was dropping right below the cross bar before Gagnon got up to get a hand on the ball, deflecting the ball out of bounds.

Within the final minutes, both teams began to turn up the intensity as each team wanted to score another goal and secure a lead before the end of the game. To no avail, neither team were able to find the back of the net.

The final score was a draw of 1-1.

The game MVPs are Siddaly Alcock for the Cougars and Sophie Campbell for the Heat.

This final regular season game wraps up the Cougars' season. We would like to thank our women's soccer team for all their hard work and dedication throughout this season. We cannot be more proud of your accomplishments and we look forward to next year.
