COUGARS OUTLAST THE WESMEN FOR SECOND STRAIGHT CONTEST

Box Score

Calgary, AB – Goals by Lewis Odosa and Ryan Clancy helped the Cougars earn a weekend sweep of the Winnipeg Wesmen. Odosa added his second of the season putting him alone atop the team scoring race.

Unlike their season opener the Cougars wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on Sunday afternoon. In the 7th minute Lewis Odosa picked off an ill-advised back pass from a Winnipeg defender. The rookie collected the ball and slid it past the keeper for his second goal in as many games.

Late in the 40th minute, Odosa crossed a ball to the far side of the goal, second year Jake Vickers settled the ball before sending it off the outside of the goal post. The Cougars led 1-0 at the half.

In the 65th minute the Cougars were awarded a corner kick after a beautiful individual effort by Josh Cameron that fell just short. Drake Rendle stepped up and swung the ball to the back post. Both Ryan Clancy and Ali Al-Chaer were the closest players to the ball. Clancy got his head to it and buried it into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Mount Royal.

The team's traded fouls and emotions began to boil over before the referee and fourth official were able to get the game back on track. Six minutes of extra time was awarded and the Wesmen narrowly broke Zielinski's shutout bid. Enrique Garcia unleashed a hot shot that sailed just over the bar.

Mount Royal was able to preserve the 2-0 victory, preserving the sweep over Winnipeg.

Cougars' keeper Kamil Zielinski only had to make two saves for the shutout, running his record to 2-0-0 on the season.

Joshua Partaker made four saves on six shots on net in the loss. He falls to 0-1-0 on the season.

Mount Royal will continue their home stand next weekend when they will host the Saskatchewan Huskies at Cougars Stadium Field.

The Wesmen will continue their Alberta road swing, playing two at MacEwan in Edmonton, beginning on Saturday afternoon.
