Box Score Calgary, AB – The Trinity Western Spartans rolled over the Mount Royal Cougars 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Cougars Stadium Field. Goals by Gommeringer (2), Hutchinson, Robertson and Tidder got the Spartans past the Cougars on snowy day in Calgary.
The Spartans opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game when Krista Gommeringer snuck past the Cougars defence and deposited the goal into the back of the net.
The Cougars composed themselves and looked to get back on track, taking advantage of the wintery conditions. Jolee Dangerfield and Kelsey Kinzner each had a scoring chance but were unable to beat Ally Williamson.
In the 37th minute the Cougars had another defensive lapse and Rachel Hutchinson made it 2-0. Just minutes later Gommeringer struck again to give TWU a 3-0 lead heading into half time.
Jenaya Robertson and Brooklyn Tidder added two quick goals to open the half, which spelled the end of Meaghan Prudhomme's day in the Cougars' goal. Prudhomme was replaced by fifth year Janelle Chicilo.
The loss drops Mount Royal to 1-5-1 on the season. The Cougars currently sit one point behind Regina for the sixth and final playoff spot.
Trinity Western improves to 5-1-1 and moves into a tie for second place in the West Division.
The Cougars will continue their home stand tomorrow afternoon when they will play host to UFV at 12:00pm at Cougars Stadium Field.
The Spartans will hit the road and travel up to Edmonton to play the MacEwan Griffins tomorrow afternoon at 12:00pm.
