Box Score Calgary, AB – The Cougars finished off the weekend sweep of the Manitoba Bisons defeating them 3-2 this afternoon at Flames Community Arenas. Matt Brown, Tyler Fiddler and Tanner Olstad scored in the Cougars' second win of the season. Justin Augert scored the lone Bisons' goal.
The Cougars and Bisons took some time adjusting to the 2pm start time. Both sides look sluggish from last night's high-tempo game. Early in the period the Cougars had the majority of the chances as the big line of Cody Cartier, Matt Brown and Tyler Fiddler refused to give up control of the puck.
It was the Bisons who had the first legitimate scoring chance towards the end of the first period. Some confusion by the Cougars defence left two Bisons' players wide open. A quick shot beat Colin Cooper but not the post, preserving the scoreless tie. After the first Mount Royal and Manitoba were scoreless.
For the second straight night the Cougars broke the deadlock. Mount Royal drew the first penalty of the game five minutes into the period. After keeping mostly to the outside, Cam Maclise got the puck to Tyler Fiddler. Fiddler drove hard to the net and was stopped but Captain Matt Brown was all over the rebound banging in his fifth of the season.
The Cougars' lead was short-lived as they became sloppy in their own zone. Some miscommunications between the forwards and defenders let Shaq Merasty walk right in on goal. Cooper made the first two saves but the puck slipped through Cooper and Justin Augert banged it home to tie the game at one.
Mount Royal did not waver and got right back on the attack. The top line struck again on a beautiful cycle play. Tyler Fiddler danced around the Bisons' defenders before saucering a nifty pass across to Cody Cartier. Cartier wasted no time and one-timed it into the far corner to restore the Mount Royal lead.
The Bisons came out hard to start the third but rookie goaltender Colin Cooper held down the fort for the Cougars.
After the Bisons defender's stick exploded, Grant Baker pounced on the puck and got it to Matt Bellerive. Bellerive went down two-on-one and found Tanner Olsatd who made no mistake, putting the game out of reach.
With the win the Cougars improve to 2-1-1 on the season. The Bisons fall to 1-2-1 after the loss.
The Cougars will head to Edmonton next Friday night for their first shot at the defending national champions, the Alberta Golden Bears.
The Bisons will play an uncharacteristic Saturday/Sunday split next weekend at home against the UBC Thunderbirds.
