COUGARS ROLL OVER BISONS IN HOME OPENER

Box Score

Calgary, AB – The Mount Royal Cougars earned their first win of the season 6-1 over the Manitoba Bisons at Flames Community Arenas. Five different Cougars scored in the game led by MRU Captain Matt Brown who had the first and last goal for MRU. Liam Bilton broke Colin Cooper's shutout bid with less than two minutes left.

Mount Royal opened the scoring on the power play when Tyler Fiddler circled the net and found Captain Matt Brown in the slot. Brown snapped a quick shot that squeaked between the legs of Bisons' netminder Justin Paulic to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.

Just five minutes later the Cougars added another goal. This time it was rookie Jarid Hauptman scoring his first career CIS goal. Jamie King came out of the corner and found Hauptman in the low slot. The rookie made no mistake putting the Cougars up 2-0.

It looked as though Manitoba might have a chance to get back in it when last year's scoring leader Cody Cartier took a holding penalty late in the period. However on the power play the Bisons' defender fell at the blue line. Cam Maclise corralled the puck and sent Tyler Fiddler in on the breakaway. Fiddler walked in alone from the red line and ripped one low stick side with just over a second left on the clock.

In the second the Cougars used their speed to break out of their zone and gain odd-man rushes at will throughout the frame. At the 17:41 mark, Cody Cartier finally broke through in his third game of the season. Tyler Fiddler set up Cartier off the sidewall, who then rolled to the middle of the ice and snapped a quick wrister past Paulic.

Manitoba took another carless penalty in the attacking end, five minutes into the third period. After working it around the Cougars got a shot on goal and Grant Baker banged in his first of the season.

Matt Brown added his second of the night on a slick backhand to make it 6-0. Tyler Fiddler's assist gave him four points of the evening.

Colin Cooper looked poised to post a shutout in his first game but late in the third, Liam Bilton pinballed the puck off bodies in front beating the rookie goaltender.

With the win the Cougars improve to 1-1-1 and the Bisons fall to 1-1-1 on the season.

The two sides will square off again in less than 24 hours back at Flames Community Arenas. The game is an afternoon affair as puck drop is scheduled for 2:00pm.
