Calgary â€" Entering the day tied for second in Canada West, the Mount Royal University Cougars picked up a huge 3-2 home victory over the Regina Cougars. The win moves Mount Royal two points clear of the U of C Dinos before the Dinos' game tonight.
Â
Just 38 seconds into the first period, Regina captain Liam Brennan fired a laser from the right circle that beat MRU goalie
Cam Lanigan blocker side to give the Saskatchewan team an early 1-0 lead. About seven minutes later,
Tyler Jewitt took a pass in the slot, outwaited Regina's tender Lucas Gore and wrapped the puck around behind the net for his second goal in as many nights. In the last 20 seconds of the frame, Lanigan had to sprawl out and stop several chances a the mouth of the goal. His big saves resulted in a rush for Mount Royal, and Jewitt fed a nice pass across the
Mackenzie Johnston, who tried to tip it by Gore with no avail.
Â
Starting the second period on the penalty kill, Mount Royal found themselves in more trouble as they would pick up three-straight penalties and find themselves facing back-to-back five-on-threes. Regina finally cracked the CIS's best penalty kill as defenceman Mark Schneider fired a one-timer through the five hole of Lanigan. Mount Royal answered back short-handed as
Zack Henry recorded his first CIS goal off the rebound of Johnston's shot. Midway through the second, MRU's second line struck again with Sebastian Pare scoring off assists from
Cody Cartier and
Tyler Fiddler.
Â
Despite four powerplays in the third, Mount Royal could not solve Gore. The Regina netminder stopped everything thrown his way and his team blocked numerous shots. In a one goal game, Regina again had to pull their goalie, but they could not get anything past Lanigan in the final period. Some key saves and blocks gave the Cougars a weekend sweep.
Â
Jewitt, Cartier and Johnston had three points each across the two weekend games. MRU's powerplay finished 0-6, while Regina went 1-6.
Â
MRU is now 14-6 on the year and 7-1 at home, while Regina falls to 6-13-1. Next weekend, Mount Royal hosts the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds for a two-game set.
