Calgary â€" In the first game back from the holiday break, the Mount Royal University Cougars left off where the ended last semester with a big 4-1 win over the visiting University of Regina Cougars.

Scoring chances were plentiful for both teams in the first period, as Regina would hit two posts early on.
Connor Collett had a chance in alone on Lucas Gore midway through the period, but fired it high keeping the game scoreless. In the last minute of the frame, Gore made his early case for the save of the year as Regina was scrambling on a delayed penalty. The netminder had to sprawl across the net after a rebound came to the stick
Mackenzie Johnston, but the Mount Royal defender was robbed point-blank. Shots finished 10-4 in Mount Royal's favour.

Mount Royal broke the scoreless deadlock with a great display of passing from their top line.
Tyler Fiddler took a pass in the neutral zone and hit
Cody Cartier in perfect stride, who in turn laid a pass onto the tape of Sebastian Pare. Pare made no mistake in on the break as he went backhand and roofed it on Gore. Penny would tie it up for Regina later in the period off a scramble at the side of the net. Dylen McKinlay sent it on net and the rebound went to the stick of Penny, who flipped it off a sprawled
Cam Lanigan into the back of the net.

Halfway through the third period, captain Matt Brown wired a shot from the right wing past the blocker side of Gore to give Mount Royal a 2-1 with 9:53 left. Regina would press to tie the game, but with the net empty, a
Tyler Fiddler shot from the neutral zone found the empty cage to put the home squad up 3-1. A late penalty by Regina put MRU on the powerplay, and newcomer
Tanner Olstad picked up his first Canada West point with a beautiful assist across the net to find a wide open
Tyler Jewitt.

The two teams will conclude their season series tomorrow with a 3 p.m. game at Flames Community Arenas. With the win, Mount Royal is now 13-6 and tied in second place in Canada West with their cross-town rivals University of Calgary.
