Saturday, November 10, 2012 - Calgary, AB...Dillon Wagner's goal with just under nine minutes remaining lifted the University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds to a 3-2 win Saturday over the host Mount Royal University Cougars in Canada West men's hockey.
Wyatt Hamilton and Scott Wasden also scored for UBC. Eric Galbraith accounted for both MRU goals.
The Thunderbirds swept the two-game series at Flames Community Arenas to improve to 6-3-1. The Cougars have lost four straight and are 2-10-0.
“I thought we were the better team tonight and it just didn't didn't happen on the scoreboard,” Cougars head coach Jean Laforest said.
Wagner was skating through the top of the crease when Scott MacDonald found him with a nice pass from the corner and he redirected it past Dalyn Flette with 8:47 on the clock.
Jordan White made 32 saves for the Thunderbirds, who were outshot 34-22.
“Not taking anything away from UBC — they came in and played a good game — but I think we should have won this game,” Laforest said.
The team's exchanged goals in the first period. Hamilton, who hails from Cochrane, beat Flette with a quick move from the crease at 14:22, four seconds after a power play had finished.
Galbraith one-timed a shot from the slot past White with 24.5 seconds remaining in the period off a nice feed from behind the net from Jordan Harrison. That goal came on the power play.
The teams traded goals again in the second. Wasden deposited a nice pass from MacDonald into the net at 10:56, but Galbraith finished off a sweet three-way passing play with Tyler Jewitt and Mike Brown at 14:48 to draw even at 2-2.
Wagner would end the Cougars night, adding his third of the year to propel the T-Birds to victory.
The Cougars now play a home-and-home with the winless Lethbridge Pronghorns Nov. 16 in Lethbridge and Nov. 17 in Calgary.
The Thunderbirds, meanwhile, host the University of Manitoba Bisons Nov. 16-17.
