MSOC: GMU (1) at MRU (4)

The Mount Royal University Cougars had a huge 4-1 win over the MacEwan University Griffins in today's men's soccer match up at Stadium Field.

David Schaefer scored his first goal of the game for MRU in the 11th minute and set the tone for what would be a high intensity, aggressive game. The goal resulted off a free kick from the top of the box, hitting the crossbar, down off the Griffins goaltender and in.

Cougars midfielder Miguel Da Rocha followed Schaefer's lead and capitalized off a beautiful through pass sent by Dane Domic to be put into the back of MacEwan's netting once again.

The Mount Royal men attacked the field with the hunger to win, rounding out the first half with nine shots on GMU's Simon Dawe.

The second half saw Schaefer's second goal of the match after a perfect slip pass from Hafiz Mahjor through Griffin defense, allowing Schaefer to sneak the ball over the outstretched leg of Dawe and tuck it away, making the score 3-0.

The Cougars final goal came from the right boot of Justin Anderson-Louch who sent a bullet of a shot from midfield, less than 10 minutes after Schaefer's.

MacEwan prevented a shutout win for the Cougars when Alvin Mazaheri was able to capitalize off an assist from Nick Steffansson in the ending extra time.

Fourth ranked MRU will face the fifth ranked GMU again tomorrow with a 3:30 p.m. kick off at Stadium Field to round out a busy weekend of double headers.

Player of the game: David Schaefer.

WSOC: GMU (2) at MRU (0)

The number two ranked MacEwan University Griffins defeat the Mount Royal University Cougars 2-0 at Stadium Field today for the first game of a two match weekend.

Meagan Lemoine put GMU on the board early with a quick reaction header after a bar down shot attempt by teammate Nicole Brodeur in the third minute.
MRU was able to hold the Griffins scoreless for the remainder of the first half, with goaltender Lizzy Knight putting up repeated diving saves against a high intensity MacEwan offense.

GMU's second goal came late in the second half, with a through pass by Grace Mwasalla past Knight to Maya Morrell who was able to tuck the ball into the back of the net, sealing the Griffin win.

Both teams had an aggressive approach to todays match, resulting in a constant battle in center field for a solid attack opportunity.

Natasha Fourlas was a force for the Cougars women, being a commanding force in the back line and the reason the highly ranked Griffins were held to two. Her consistent distribution and leadership on the field shut down the assertive play from MacEwan.

The Cougars and the Griffins meet up tomorrow for their second match of the weekend at Stadium field with a 1 p.m. kick-off where the MRU women hope to claim a wildcard spot in playoffs.
