MSOC: GMU (3) at MRU (12)
The Mount Royal Cougars dominated at home against the MacEwan Griffins this afternoon in what was a fast-paced, exhilarating game.
MRU was able to put up a massive 12 goals across six scorers with MacEwan returning three goals in less than five minutes. The 12 goals broke the Canada West record for the most in a game (previously set by Victoria on Oct. 28, 2004 with a 9-0 win over Saskatchewan).
With the combined goals of 15, the game also shattered the previous Canada West record of 10 (previously set by UBC winning 8-2 over Calgary on Oct. 26, 2003).
The game opened with
Miguel Da Rocha's rocket of a shot through traffic in the fifth minute. GMU was able to capitalize quickly within a minute when a penalty kick was awarded in their favour after MRU's handball. Rakan Yassin stepped up and fired the ball into the bottom right corner past
Sterling Kerr.
The Griffins kept up their momentum, finding the net two more times within two minutes of each other. Stefan Gajic took the lead for MacEwan, hitting the top right corner with an assist from Joseph Abrahart, followed by Alvin Mazaheri who was able to run in behind Kerr and receive a pass from Yassin, bringing the score to 3-1.
The Cougars were able to find a groove after
Justin Anderson-Louch was able to pinball a ball through traffic to the boot of Da Rocha for his second goal of the match.
Dane Domic joined the score sheet after catching a rebound from
Moe El Gandour whose shot hit the left post to equalize the game at 3-3 in the 24th minute of play. Two minutes later,
Niklas Liebich sent a pass backways using his heel to find Da Rocha for a third time at the top of the box, sending the ball flying into the back of the netting.
MRU capitalized once more before the end of the first half when El Gandour found Domic once again to tap the ball past Simon Dawe, making the score 5-3. In the final seconds before the half wrapped up, Dawe was awarded a red card. Mason Perras stepped in for the remaining 45 as Dawe was forced to leave the game.
The remaining half found to be just as action packed as the first, with the Cougars scoring in the 54th and 56th minutes. El Gandour took a penalty shot for MRU, waiting patiently for the perfect opportunity and was able to find the back of the net. David Schaeffer capitalized shortly after, getting his fourth goal of the regular season with an assist from Liebich.
Within a minute Schaeffer sent another shot towards the goal from the right side, curling it high and wide, sneaking it inside the far top corner.
Domic scored his second goal of the game, burying it behind Perras making the score 9-3 for the Cougar men.
The final 20 minutes of regular time saw
Dawid Dudek and
Josh Flaksmans first goals of the season, and El Gandour scoring his second of the game but third of the regular season. The final result ended up being a huge 12-3 win for the Cougars.
The men will meet Saskatchewan for the first time this year next weekend at Stadium Field. Make sure to tune in for the 1 p.m. kick off Saturday on
Canada West TV present by Co-op.

WSOC: GMU (2) at MRU (1)
The Mount Royal University Cougars fell to the MacEwan Griffins during their senior day game in an extremely cold match at Stadium Field this afternoon.
MRU led the Griffins for the first time in their three meet ups this season when
Ashtyn Haycock put one in for the Cougars in the 27th minute of play.
Monet Alonso-Cruz was able to control the ball that had bounced through traffic in front of the net, passing to Haycock and allowing her to capitalize.
GMU was able to score an equalizer in the last moments of the first half when Nicole Brodeur scored off a cross reception sent over by Grace Mwasalla.
Both team were repeatedly robbed of shot opportunities by the 40 km per hour winds at the pitch today, met with horizontal rain that quickly turned to snow in the second half.
Salma Kamel was able to score the final goal of the game for GMU in what was nothing short of the perfect kick. The ball came from way down field and found its place in the top right corner of the net.
Today the Cougars celebrated their two graduates from the women's team alongside alumni from the 1996-97 ACAC championship team and the 2011-2012 ACAC futsol championship team.
Janai Martens joined MRU in her first year and finds herself the team's captain in this her fifth and final year wearing a cougars uniform. Not only was she an impressive force on the field, she was named an Academic All-Canadian through all five years at university.
Katrina Greenley came to the cougars after previously playing two years for the SAIT Trojans. She has demonstrated that her undeniable ability and leadership have become a pillar for this Cougars team in her three years at MRU.
These women will forever leave their mark, being perfect examples for future cougars to look up too.
The Cougars women's team will finish the regular season two weeks from now on the road against the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Tune in on October 23 for the 1 p.m. kick off on
