CALGARY - The University of Fraser Valley took a well-earned victory against the Mount Royal University Cougars on Kenyon court. They took an early lead and sustained it throughout each quarter despite the Cougars' best efforts. Â
For Fraser Valley, Deanna Tuchscherer led with 23 points, closely followed by Taylor Claggett with 22. For Mount Royal, Sarah Rinsky led with 15 points, followed by Charity Marlatt with seven.Â
The Cougars' Jenika Martens opened the game with a quick layup, but was soon matched by the Cascade's Tuchscherer. Fraser Valley took an early lead which the Cougars struggled to keep up with. They sustained their lead until the buzzer, ending 19-9.Â
Mount Royal worked to slowly close the gap as the second quarter opened, but Fraser Valley were able to land several layups to maintain a wide lead. The Cougars were landing all free throw opportunities awarded while the Cascades were finding several three pointers. Fraser Valley entered the half leading 42-23.Â
Fraser Valley's Amanda Thompson opened the third with a quick jumper. The Cougars began a trend of trading points as they landed several layups between Cascade baskets. Fraser Valley took control of the court once more at the halfway point, setting the pace. Mount Royal's Abbey Gillette finished the quarter with a free throw, but the Cascades led with a strong score of 69-38.
Mount Royal's Rinsky led her team in the fourth, taking back-to-back three pointers early on and assisting with a third. For Fraser Valley, Tuchscherer and Claggett found several opportunities of their own to pull their team further into the lead, despite the Cougars' efforts. Tuchscherer earned the final three pointer in the last 30 seconds, ending the match 83-57.Â
It two teams will face off once more for the season on Saturday, January 25th, on Kenyon Court. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
