CALGARY - The University of Fraser Valley swept their final weekend matchup against the Mount Royal University Cougars on Kenyon Court. The teams traded control of the court across the quarters, but Fraser Valley pulled ahead in the final minutes to win the night 69-63.
For Fraser Valley, Taylor Claggett led with 24 points, followed by Deanna Tuchscherer with 16. For Mount Royal, both Marnie Garner and Jenika Martens led with 14 points.Â
Fraser Valley's Claggett opened the match with a jumper after a great deal of pushback from the defenders. The Cougars were a bit slow to organize their efforts as the Cascades capitalized on several openings. They were focusing on landing layups, Tuchscherer and Claggett earning many of the points. Fraser Valley came out of the quarter in the lead, 17-15.Â
The Cougars gained momentum in the second, landing several three pointers to surpass the Cascades lead. They soon earned a consistent five point lead. Fraser Valley was close on their heels for much of the quarter, but the Cougars pulled ahead to finish the first half 40-33.
The third was slowed a bit by a handful of free throws for the Cascades, narrowing the score gap. They capitalized on the lapse to earn a series of points, blocking the Cougars from many opportunities of their own. Mount Royal's Garner was able to sneak through to earn a few layups. Fraser Valley held strong to surpass the Cougars to take the lead once more at 56-52.Â
The defences were up in the final quarter, both teams struggling to push past to land a basket. Mount Royal earned a handful of points from layups while Fraser Valley found most of their opportunities in free throws. With less than 30 seconds remaining, Claggett earned the final point of the night on a free throw. Cougars' Garner attempted a layup in the last ten seconds, but was unable to make it stick.Â
