CALGARY - After a tough match on Kenyon Court, the University of Fraser Valley Cascades won the night against the Mount Royal University Cougars. The two teams traded points for much of the game, but in the end it was taken by the Cascades with a narrow final moments.Â
For Mount Royal, Adam Pahl led with 15 points, closely followed by Nate Petrone with 14. For Fraser Valley, Sukhjot Bains led with 26 points, followed by Vick Toor with 16.Â
Mount Royal's Pahl opened the game with a three pointer eight seconds in, taking a bit of a lead with Fraser Valley close on their heels. Mount Royal's Moreau Amadou landed several points to advance his team's lead. He scored the final three pointer of the quarter to seal the score at 28-22.Â
The Cougars' Petrone landed several jumpers in the beginning of the second. The Cascades capitalized on multiple free throw opportunities to narrow the score. Despite a strong Cougars lead, Fraser Valley powered forward to steal it by just two points. Cascades' Bains landed a handful of the points that closed the gap with a final layup from Daniel Adediran, ending 45-43.Â
Adediran opened the scoring for the third, followed shortly by Pahl with a layup. Fraser Valley's Vick Toor widened the lead with several quick points. Mount Royal found some fresh momentum halfway through to tie the score, fighting hard for every point. Despite a buzzer beater jumper by Cascades' Parm Bains, the score was tied at 63.Â
The teams traded points for the beginning of the first until Fraser Valley's Bains set off a streak of points for the team. Mount Royal struggled to keep up as they gained a healthy lead. In the final few minutes, Lincoln Anderson landed a series of layups to bring the score to within four points. A final attempt on basket in the last second failed, securing victory for the Cascades, 86-82.Â
The two teams will play once more for the season on Saturday, January 25th, on Kenyon Court. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
