MBB: Fraser Valley takes Kenyon Court, 95-86

CALGARY - The University of Fraser Valley had a successful weekend on Kenyon Court against the Mount Royal University Cougars. They swept the weekend, taking the final evening 95-86 after trading places in the lead.

For Mount Royal, Matthew Guinto led with 30 points, followed by Adam Pahl with 16. For Fraser Valley, Parm Bains led with 27 points, followed by Matt Cooley with 16.

Fraser Valley's Cooley earned the first points of the night with a quick layup, soon followed by a three pointer by Guinto for the Cougars. The Cascades pushed into a narrow lead with Cooley setting the pace. They landed a series of points late in the quarter to seal a heavy lead, ending 24-13.

Guinto set off a streak of scoring for the Cougars early in the second, the team capitalizing on a series of free throws. These allowed the team to slowly inch ahead of Fraser Valley as they were unable to make a large dent in the quarter. Cascades' Cooley and Bains landed several jumpers to keep afloat, but the Cougars held onto their slight lead to enter halftime 41-38.

In a turn around, Fraser Valley dominated with numerous layups in the third, quickly catching up to the Cougars' lead. The teams struggled with control of the court as they matched points. Bains earned a series of points to pull his team into the lead with Sukhraj Bains solidifying their advance with a final layup. The quarter ended with a Cascades advantage at 64-57

The momentum in the fourth was tripped up by a series of free throws for both sides. Fraser Valley maintained their healthy lead by following up with a handful of layups. Mount Royal found many opportunities of their own, but couldn't close the score gap to less than eight. With a final series of free throws for the Cascades, they closed their victory with one final toss.

The Cougars will play next in Winnipeg against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday, January 31st. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
