MHKY: Mount Royal wins night in double overtime, 4-3

CALGARY - The Mount Royal University Cougars hosted the University of Regina Cougars to a lively game at Flames Community Arena.

For the Cougars, goalie Riley Morris made 19 saves out of 22 shots while forward Connor Chartier and Sean Richards led with six shots and one assist each. For Regina, goalie Brandon Holtby made 49 saves out of 53 shots while Connor Chaulk and Arthur Miller set the pace with three shots, one assist, and one goal each.

Mount Royal dominated the first quarter with a heavy offensive play. Ryley Lindgren opened the scoring early with an assist from Richards and Brad Kennedy. Regina fought back, deflecting the Cougars' attempts on net. Mount Royal's Andrew Fyten managed to shake Regina's defenses to find the back of the net, earning his fourth goal of the season. Cougars held the lead 2-0.

The Cougars took the first advantage in the second, Josh Bly sneaking past the Regina defenders to take his first goal of the season, assisted by Chartier. Regina soon found their momentum and stole a goal of their own as Tanner Nagel shot past Cougars' goalie to earn his second of the season. Nearing the buzzer, Chaulk capitalized on a power play to take a goal of his own, assisted by Miller and Zak Hicks. The period ended 3-2 for the Cougars.

Neither team was able to take control of the ice in the third as they struggled to find an advantage. After 13 minutes of play, Miller broke the stalemate to take his fourth goal of the season. The tied score of 3-3 was unable to be settled and trickled into overtime.

After an unsuccessful first overtime, it was a massive struggle on both sides to defeat the defenders. Just before the buzzer, Mount Royal's Connor Blake managed to slip the puck past Regina's goalie Brandon Holtby after a struggle out front, finally breaking the tie.

The two teams will face off once more for the season on Saturday, January 18th, at Flames Community Arena. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
