CALGARY - The University of Regina Cougars were hosted by the Mount Royal University Cougars at Flames Community Arenas for their final matchup of the season.
Mount Royal swept the weekend, took the night 6-1.Â
For Mount Royal, forward Brandan Arnold led with six shots and one assist while goalie Riley Morris made 21 saves. For Regina, defenseman Brennan Riddle led his team with two shots and one goal while goalie Brandon Holtby made 45 saves.Â
Mount Royal's Riley Lindgren opened the scoring after seven minutes of play, assisted by a quick pass from Keegan Iverson. Just a couple of minutes later, Connor Rankin earned his fifth goal of the season thanks to assist from Chris Gerrie. Regina fought hard for each play, but were consistently pushed back by the Mount Royal defenders.Â
The second period was full of energy right out of the gate. Regina's Riddle earned his second goal of the season with an assist from Conner Chaulk and Bryce Platt. Less than a minute later, Mount Royal responded with a goal of their own from Kade Jensen, his third of the season. It was an intense struggle for control of the ice throughout the rest of the period. The stalemate was finally broken by Mount Royal's Connor Chartier with three minutes to spare, assisted by Jensen.Â
Both teams were fighting hard for an advantage in the third. Mount Royal's Connor Blake shot through the struggle, finding the back of the net after eight and a half minutes of play. Regina toughened their defences to prevent a further gap, but the Cougars' Josh Bly was able to sneak past to earn his second of both the season and the weekend. Regina pushed to close the score just a bit more, but were unable to make a goal by the final buzzer.Â
