CALGARY - The Mount Royal Cougars hosted not only the Regina Cougars but more than 1400 kids from local schools at the home opener. The Get School'd event made for an electric crowd that cheered on the ladies as they battled on the court.
The match started off with both teams trading baskets and led to Regina taking an early 14-10 lead after the first quarter. They led in three-pointers in the quarter going 2-7 to Mount Royal's 1-6.
Regina remained in the lead through the second quarter partly thanks to a solid effort from the line going 8-10.
The third quarter was largely dominated by Regina as they set the pace of the game. Mount Royal led a strong defensive effort but were unable to prevent Regina from extending the lead to 52-36.
The final quarter was a close match as Mount Royal came out strong with a fresh play. They brought fresh energy bringing the crowd back into the game. It wasn't enough though as the Regina Cougars would turn the tides once again, winning 67-52.
The Regina point leaders were fifth year guard, Michaela Kleisinger, and third year guard, Faith Reid, with 14 points each. The Mount Royal points leaders were fifth year forward, Charity Marlatt, and first year forward, Jenika Martens with 12 each.
The two teams will face off again on Friday, November 8th, at 12 p.m. at Kenyon Court.
