Mount Royal retakes the weekend against Regina

CALGARY - The rematch between the Mount Royal and Regina Cougars took place Friday afternoon on Kenyon Court. Mount Royal looked to respond after yesterday's loss.

The Mount Royal Cougars came out to a great start, showing fresh energy in their starting line. They were led by fourth year guard Abbey Gillette who hit a couple shots right out of the gate. She scored six of Mount Royal's 17 points in the first quarter and finished with a game high 20 points.

Regina was making a strong effort in the second quarter by capitalizing on defensive rebounds and managed to dominate in the paint. Their first year forward Emily Dewey set the pace with 19 points in the game. The teams went into halftime with a 32-30 Mount Royal lead.

MRU was showing confidence through the third quarter as they played some of their best ball of the season. The third quarter closed with a Mount Royal lead of 56-46.

Halfway through the fourth quarter, Regina had narrowed the gap to just two, shifting their luck.  The two teams inched towards the final buzzer, consistently staying between two points. Regina made a solid effort to close the gap, but were unable to capitalize in the final seconds. Mount Royal's Abbey Gillette continued her strong play and was the difference maker.

The game ended with a 71-68 victory for MRU making a weekend split between the two teams. The win puts MRU at 2-2 on the season and REG fall to 1-3.
