MBB: Victoria opens the weekend with a victory, 95-75

CALGARY - The University of Victoria Vikes put on an offensive show as they visited Kenyon Court to play the Mount Royal University Cougars on Friday night. They took the court 95-75.

Looking to improve a four game win streak before the Christmas break, the Vikes handed the Cougars their fourth straight loss.

With a slow start to the game, the opening five minutes only saw ten points scored between the two teams. The Vikes were able to rise above the last half of the quarter to gain a 19-13 lead over the Cougars. Victoria's Dominick Oliveri and Aaron Tesfagiorigs closed the quarter with a quick 3-pointer.

Mount Royal opened the second as Jaskaran Singh scored his own 3-pointer, narrowing the score gap to 19-16. However, the Vikes maintained their strong lead by taking advantage of several openings. They closed out the half with a comfortable 20 point lead over the Cougars, ending with a free throw from Trent Monkman. The match now stood at 50-30 for the Vikes.

The Cougars came to play in the third quarter, bringing some fresh energy to the match. Mount Royal's Matthew Guinto earned two free throws after just 30 seconds of play. Victoria's Jason Scully nailed a layup to solidify their healthy lead, followed by a quick 3-pointer by Cougars' Moreau Amadou, closing the quarter at 71-58.

The Cougars were short on luck as the Vikes once again took advantage in the fourth, solidifying their win. They finished the night with a 95-75 victory. Guinto took the final point of the night with a layup with just 18 seconds remaining.

Victoria's point leader, Matthew Ellis offered up 21 points and Oliveri had 16 rebounds.

The two teams will face off once again on Saturday, November 30, 2019, on Kenyon Court. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
