MBB: Victoria sweeps the final weekend for the Cougars

CALGARY - The Mount Royal University Cougars hosted the University of Victoria Vikes to their final match of the year on Kenyon Court. The Vikes took it in the final seconds of overtime, 95-93.

Victoria's Matthew Ellis led his team with 21 points and nine of his 13 field goals successful. Mount Royal's Adam Pahl and Lincoln Anderson each came away with 16 points and six of their 13 field goals successful.

Victoria opened the game with a swift layup from Hayden Lejeune, quickly followed by Cougars' Pahl landing one of his own. The Vikes soon pulled into a seven point lead which quickly turned into a healthy 18 point lead. Pahl landed several more points along with Matthew Guinto and Moreau Amadou to narrow the gap. However, the Vikes took the quarter 27-14.

The Vikes took control of the second soon after tipoff. Mount Royal's Dylan Lutes broke their streak with a layup. They traded free throws until Cougars Matthew Fullerton and Anderson narrowed the gap to 11 points by the halfway mark. However, Victoria's Jason Scully snuck the team further into the lead with a 3-pointer and a quick layup. The two teams proceeded to trade points, ending 46-35 for Victoria.

Cougars started the third off strong with a 3-pointer from Anderson. Victoria soon took back the advantage to widen the gap, Lejeune sinking a dunk to secure their lead at 63-45. Mount Royal's Quinn Taylor broke their streak with a 3-pointer of his own. They made a strong effort to close the gap, but Victoria came out on top with 74-59.

With some fresh subs, both teams were showing fresh energy for the fourth. Mount Royal began by scoring some quick points, bringing them closer to overtaking the Vikes. They held onto this energy to bring the score down to a sliver. Matthew Guinto scored a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds to tie the score at 84-84.

Sneaking into overtime, Victoria's Aaron Tesfagiorgis broke the tie with a freethrow. They traded points until Victoria's Ellis landed a jumper followed by a successful free throw, sneaking into a lead at 95-93. With seconds to spare, Guinto took a shot for a 3-pointer, but just missed.

The Cougars will play again in the new year, hosted by the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack on Friday, January 3, 2020. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
