WHKY: Mount Royal takes home ice with 2-1 victory

CALGARY - The Mount Royal University Cougars played an evenly matched game on their home ice against the University of Regina Cougars. Mount Royal took the evening with a 2-1 win after a well-fought battle.

The match began with a hard offensive push from both sides. Mount Royal got a shot on net soon after puck drop, but were unable to seal the deal. They soon took two penalties, giving the advantage to Regina. They responded with a shot of their own on Mount Royal's goalie Kaitlyn Ross, but she swept it out of the air with her mit.

At six minutes, Regina received a penalty for cross checking, but were soon followed by a Mount Royal penalty, levelling the ice once more. Both teams were tripped up by several more penalties before the first buzzer. The scored remained 0-0 going into the first intermission.

Both sides struggled to get clear opportunities on their opponents' nets, despite some heavy offensive efforts. Despite the added fire, they were each playing it a bit safer this round, preventing penalties to avoid giving away the advantage. The second period closed with a massive save by Ross.

Just 47 seconds into the third, Mount Royal's Breanne Trotter was out front the Regina net when Nicolette Seper swiftly passed the puck. Trotter rebounded it into the net to finally break the stalemate and bring Mount Royal into a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes in, Mount Royal's Seper passed to Victoria Byer who then rocketed it past Regina's goalie, Jane Kish, scoring her first goal of her career.

With just 62 seconds remaining in the game, Regina's Tamara McVannel broke the shutout with a nimble goal, thanks to an assist from Jordan Kulbida. Mount Royal's Anna Purschke tried to retaliate with a goal soon after, but wasn't able to get past Kish.

Despite the strong effort from the visitors, Mount Royal took the game with 2-1. Ross made 10 saves in the game, facing a heavy push from Regina. Regina's Kish blocked 14 potential goals.

The two teams face off again on Saturday, October 26th, once again hosted at the Flames Community Arena. It will be broadcasted live on CanadaWest.tv, presented by Co-op.
