CALGARY- The UBC Thunderbirds (10-4) dominated play and cruised to a 87-59 victory over the Mount Royal Cougars (3-11) Saturday evening on Kenyon Court.
Shilpa Khanna was at home on the three-point line, going 6-11 for a game high 18 points. Marina Kehrig was the top Cougar on the night, going 4-6 from the floor for a team high 10 points.
Both teams started the game filling the hoop. Khanna delivered on her two early three-point attempts while Angela Driscoll controlled the game on offense for Mount Royal. Making 8-10 of their early field goals, 3-4 from long range, it was the Thunderbird who began the game up 19-13.
The Cougars slowed down on offense after Driscoll and Becky Nash briefly exited the game late in the first as the Thunderbirds went on a 10-0 run to take a 26-13 lead.
Nash would come back into the game late in the quarter, making four quick points to trail 26-17 at the end of one.
The Thunderbirds continued on their torrent pace in the second quarter. Khanna led her team with 9 points, all from three-point range while teammates Keylyn Filewich and Jessica Hanson went 4-7 and 4-6 respectively in the half.
The Cougars were unable to score any second chance points in the half, only pulling down a single offensive rebound and returned to the locker room trailing 46-31.
The Thunderbirds cruised through the third quarter, resting Maddison Penn and letting their bench do most of the heavy lifting. Samantha Baumgartner put up 6 points while Kara Spotten went 4-6 from the floor for 8 points to give the visitors a comfortable 70-45 lead going into the fourth.
Khanna, who stayed on the court for almost the entire duration of the game, continued doing what she does best in the fourth. Khanna would make her sixth three pointer of the game to give her 18 points.
The Thunderbirds piled it on the rest of the way, finishing off the Cougars 87-59.
Mount Royal will visit Saskatchewan next weekend for a set against the Huskies while UBC will return to Vancouver to host Brandon.
