CALGARY, AB – After an 89-48 loss to the MacEwan University Griffins on Saturday evening, the Mount Royal University Cougars women's basketball team dropped their second game in as many nights at Kenyon Court. Megan Wood contributed a game-high 21 points for the Griffins as MacEwan made nearly 70% of their three-point field goals.
The visitors jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before Melissa Moore connected for three points. She immediately followed her long-range basket with a baseline jump shot before Brooke Lister promptly knocked down a pair of attempts from beyond the arc. Despite the Cougars' brief scoring flurry, Mount Royal trailed 21-13 with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter of action.
In the second stanza, a backdoor feed to Brielle Wise extended the Griffins' lead to 11, which proceeded back-to-back made free throws from Mount Royal's Angela Driscoll. Launching a three-point try to beat the buzzer was Kendall Lydon, thus pushing MacEwan's lead to 19 at the break.
Katie Waring managed to find the score sheet partway through third quarter with a difficult drive to the heart of the key, but the deficit would balloon to 35 points after 30 minutes. The Griffins had posted 19 assists to a mere eight by the Cougars before the fourth got underway.
Lister's uncontested layup concluded the scoring as the Regina native poured in a team-high 13-point performance for Mount Royal.
Mount Royal now sits at 1-15 in the Explorer Division. Conversely, a 13-3 record belongs to the Griffins after securing their fourth consecutive victory.
Next up for the Blue and White is a visit to Prince George where they will take on the struggling UNBC Timberwolves, beginning with a Friday night showdown. The Cougars have their lone win of the season against the Timberwolves.
Meanwhile, the Griffins are also scheduled for an upcoming Western road trip as they will face the UBC Okanagan Heat next weekend.
