Huskies give it right back to Cougars in blowout win of their own

Box Score

Justin McCaffrey, Mount Royal Sports Information

CALGARY – The Saskatchewan Huskies avenged their blowout loss on Friday night by hammering the Cougars 6-2 on Saturday night at Flames Community Arenas. The win puts some distance between the Huskies and Cougars for top spot in the Canada West standings.

The Huskies wouldn't let Colin Cooper's shutout streak continue for long as they lit the lamp just 50 seconds into the game. Logan McVeigh picked off an errant pass in the slot and ripped it past the blocker of Cooper to give Saskatchewan their first lead of the weekend.

Jamal Watson and Connor Rankin worked the puck around down low in the Huskies' zone just after the halfway point of the period. As Rankin drove to the net Jordan Fransoo caught him with a high stick, drawing a penalty.

Mount Royal went to the power play and wasted no time leveling the score. Tanner Olstad held the puck along then half wall then dished it to Captain Matt Brown in front of the net. Brown spun and buried his league-leading sixth power play goal of the season.

The Cougars earned themselves another power play just before the end of the period but could not convert. Heading into the intermission, the Huskies and Cougars remained tied at one.

Grant Baker took a hooking penalty to begin the second period. The Cougars looked to have the Huskies contained for the majority of the power play but with 14 seconds left, Saskatchewan netted the go ahead goal. Off a ricochet, the puck landed right on the tape of Michael Sofillas. With Colin Cooper at his mercy, Sofillas ripped the puck into the middle of the net, to restore the Huskies' lead.

Jordan Tkatch scored his first and second career Canada West goals late in the second period. His first came off a scramble in front to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead. He scored his second streaking to the net and deflecting Andrew Johnson's shot on net. Saskatchewan would hold that 4-1 lead after two periods in the books.

The third period was riddled with penalties for both sides and the flow of the game suffered because of it. Cam Lanigan replaced Colin Cooper and allowed two goals to Michael Sofillas and Tanner Lishchynsky. Jesse Lees was able to beat Jordan Cooke one last time with just 18 second to make it a 6-2 final.

The Cougars fall to 5-3-0 and are now five points back of the first place Huskies who are now 7-2-1 on the season.

Saskatchewan will take their bye next weekend before preparing for another road trip to Calgary where they will face the Dinos on Nov. 18.

Mount Royal will continue their home stand next weekend when Regina comes to town. Friday night's matchup will be at 7pm MST at Flames Community Arenas. Saturday's contest will be an afternoon affair, beginning at 3pm MST.
