Box Score CALGARY- The Mount Royal Cougars' lost their 3rd consecutive game on Friday night at Kenyon Court falling to the MacEwan Griffins. The Griffins completed their sweep of the Cougars with a 68-62 victory.
The game got off to a slow start for both teams, as they tried settling in and getting into a rhythm offensively. MacEwan opened up running a full court press on the Cougars, often times forcing a turnover, but failing to cash it in for points.
MacEwan was the first team to settle in on offense, putting together a 7-0 run in less than a minute. Paige Knull caught a pass at half court that just squeaked by a gambling Cougar defender, swiftly moving the ball along to Kayla Ivicak who was able to convert the wide open 3-point attempt.
MacEwan was able to hold Mount Royal to just nine points in both quarters, with a score of 33-18 at halftime. The Griffins grabbed eight more steals than the Cougars in the first half, many resulting from their full court press defense. Kerilynn MacLennan and Kayla Ivicak of MacEwan led all scorers at half with nine points apiece.
Mount Royal finally got things going offensively to start the second half, as they tried to cut into the MacEwan lead. The Cougars scored nine points in the first three minutes of play in the third quarter, matching their point total from the first half.
The Cougars' offense slowed down in the fourth, unable to keep momentum going to close in on the MacEwan lead. However, the Cougars put together a 9-0 run at just the perfect time late in the fourth. Mount Royal was able to cut the Griffins lead to two points but ran out of steam with 20 seconds left.
Mount Royal dropped both games to MacEwan, dropping to 2-4 on the season. While MacEwan gets back to .500 with a record of 4-4.
The Cougars goes on to play their cross-town rivals, the Calgary Dinos' for a home and home series on Thursday, Dec. 1 and while MacEwan also starts their own home and home series with Alberta on Thursday, Dec 1 as well.
