Calgary â€" In the season finale for the Mount Royal University Cougars women's basketball team, the MacEwan University Griffins overcame a slow first quarter to win by 71-43.

For the first three minutes of the game, neither team could get a shot to fall. Megan Wood was the most impactful for the Griffins, hauling down several offensive rebounds and recording six points.
Abby Gibb led Mount Royal with five. The Cougars' great defense was able to hold MacEwan to just 10 points on 22 per cent shooting, and the home squad led 15-10 after one.

MacEwan hit their stride in the second quarter, putting up 21 points, including seven by Wood and six by Kubinec. Mount Royal found themselves in early foul trouble and the opposition made them pay. The Griffins held a 24-16 rebound edge heading into the half and were up 31-27.

Behind a 17-1 run, the Griffins dominated the third, outscoring the Cougars 27-6 to lead 58-33. Kelly Fagan had eight points and Kari Kubinec had five. MacEwan showed why they were a top tier team with this scoring outburst.

The lead built up by MacEwan was insurmountable for Mount Royal to overcome. The Cougars added a couple of three pointers, but it was not enough. The 51 rebounds by MacEwan were the big difference in the win.

Graduating Cougar
Candice Duckett had seven points and nine rebounds in her final university basketball game, while Wood and Fagan again recorded double-doubles for MacEwan.

Mount Royal finished the year with a 6-14 mark, but will retain much of there team as they have just one player planning to depart. The Griffins enter the playoffs as the No. 2 seed and a 16-4 record.Â
