COUGARS FALL TO CASCADES IN AFTERNOON AFFAIR

Calgary- The Mount Royal Cougars dropped the Super Bowl afternoon contest 70â€"51 against the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. The Cougars were led by Jayla Verney with 15 points and Yasmene Saghir with 11 points.

The first quarter was already physical with the Cascades fighting for revenge and the Cougars fighting for another win. Verney brought in four points for the Cougars, while Kaitlyn Brink potted six for the Cascades finishing the first quarter tied 13-13.

The Cascades began to take their revenge, as a few good runs put them ahead early. Nataliia Gavryliuk and Brink carried the Cascades finishing off the first half with 12 and 11 points, respectively. The second quarter ended with the Cascades in front of MRU 35-23.

The Cascades didn't stop there at half. They scored another 18 points in the third quarter while the Cougars countered with 14 points of their own. MRU pressed hard in the third, battling defensively with a strong full court press. Verney's heroics were as good as ever, as she made a buzzer beating third point shot from half to end the quarter.

The fourth was where the Cascades pulled away. Wierks pulling in multiple baskets made the Cascades near unstoppable. The Cascades took the game in the fourth making it 70-51.
UFV was led by Wierks with 20 points, followed by teammates Brink and Gavryliuk with 19 points.

With the loss the Cougars drop to 6-10, while the Cascades improve to 9-7 in the Explorer Division.The Cougars will be on the road against Thompson Rivers University at 6 p.m. on February 6, as UFV with take on UNBC Friday at 6 p.m.
