GRIFFINS TAKE FIRST GAME OF THE BATTLE OF ALBERTA

Edmonton, AB - The MacEwan University women's basketball team defeated the Mount Royal University Cougars, 101-48, to open the 2015-16 Canada West campaign.  The game was played at the City Center Campus, at MacEwan University.  The victory marks head coach David Oldham's first Canada West (CIS) win at the helm of the MacEwan University Griffins.

The Griffins open the game by going on a 19-point run to take a commanding 21-3 advantage midway through the first quarter.  The Griffins were firing on all cylinders playing great defense holding Mount Royal to the one three-point basket until the final minute of play in the quarter, while shooting 48% from the floor.  MacEwan University led by 18 points after the first quarter.  Megan Wood, Edmonton, AB led the way with nine points.  

In the second quarter, MacEwan University continued to pressure the Cougars and kept their double digit lead throughout the half. Mount Royal's offense came alive shooting 53% from the floor and close the gap at halftime to 52-29.  Wood continued to lead the way for MacEwan University with 11 points.  Drew Knox, Sherwood Park, AB led all Cougars at the break with seven points.  

The Griffins continued to play a balanced game in the second half out scoring Mount Royal University by 11 points in the third quarter, shooting 72% in the frame.  In the fourth quarter MacEwan University held Mount Royal to five points as their hot shooting from the floor continued. The Griffins would go onto win the game by a score of 101-48.  

The Griffins were led by Wood with a game high 20 point performance.  Five different Griffins were in double figures including player of the game Karolina Wieczorek, Edmonton, Alberta with 13 points, nine total rebounds and two assists.  The Griffins out rebounded the Cougars, 43 to 23, paced by Wieczorek's nine boards. MacEwan University shot 52% from the floor for the game including six baskets from behind the arc.    

The Cougars were paced by Melissa Moore, Calgary, AB with a team high 11 points and nine rebounds.  Know added 10 points in the loss to MacEwan University for the Cougars. 

The Griffins and Cougars are right back at it tomorrow night, Saturday, November 7, at the City Centre Campus Court, at MacEwan University, game time set for 5:00PM MT.
