COUGARS SQUANDER 14-POINT LEAD GIVING UNBC THEIR FIRST WIN

Box Score

Calgary, AB – The UNBC Timberwolves came all the way back from a 14-point deficit to defeat the Mount Royal Cougars 67-60 and earn their first win of the season. Maria Mongomo led all scorers with 22 points. Melissa Moore had a team-high 20 for the Cougars.

The Cougars got out to a 7-3 run to start the game. They continually pushed the pace and forced the Timberwolves into some mental mistakes. Tied 7-7 with just over three minutes to play in the quarter, Angela Driscoll stole the ball off a double team and ran the floor laying it in to restore the Cougars' lead. The Cougars took a 16-10 into the quarter break.

Mount Royal built a 19-12 lead in the second but some solid outside shooting from UNBC brought the game to within just a basket. Melissa Moore was on fire from the field scoring 17 points in the first half including three three-pointers. At the half Mount Royal led 35-25.

The third quarter did not yield a lot of scoring as the two sides only scored 9 points in the first five minutes of the half. Cassidy Taal changed that at the five minute mark when she cut inside on a sneaky pass from Moore for two. The Cougars ran their lead up to 50-41 and that's how the quarter would finish.

In the fourth and final quarter the Cougars had trouble finding the basket early. They finally scored their first bucket three minutes in and in the process allowed the Timberwolves back in the game. The Cougars lost the lead for the first time when UNBC hit a deep three to go up 54-53.

UNBC increased their lead to five points before Angela Driscoll hit a pair of free throws to make it a single-score game. UNBC hit another three-pointer just seconds later and that was the dagger. The Cougars squandered a 14-point lead, dropping the contest 67-60.

The Timberwolves get their first win of the season improving to 1-6. The Cougars remain winless with a record of 0-7.

These two sides will meet again tomorrow evening back at Kenyon Court. Tip-off goes at 6:00pm.
