COUGARS DROP SECOND STRAIGHT MATCH ON HOME COURT

Box Score

Calgary, AB – The Alberta Golden Bears completed the sweep of the Mount Royal Cougars winning 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-18) Saturday night on Kenyon Court.  Ryan Nickifor led the Golden Bears in scoring for the second straight night, putting up 16.0 points. Jordan Parkin was the lone player to hit double digits for the Cougars, scoring 10.5 points.

Mount Royal looked like a whole new team on Saturday, just one night removed from a crushing defeat at the hands of the Golden Bears. Mount Royal jumped out to an early 10-9 on the backs of Jordan Parkin and Tyler Schmidt. The high-flying duo accounted for six of the Cougars' first 11 points.

The Cougars led by as much as two points before a quick Alberta run put the Golden Bears up 16-15, forcing Shawn Sky to call his first timeout. The battle waged on as both teams made countless service errors at the line. Down 23-21 Shawn Sky called his final timeout, looking to settle his group. It was Alberta who came out of the stoppage on fire, scoring two of three points to wrap up the first set.

The Golden Bears picked up where they left off in the second set, running out to a 10-6 lead. The Cougars clawed back getting to within three points at 16-13. Alberta continued to press and got out to a 22-18 lead. Ryan Nickifor was on fire in the second, blowing everything past the Cougars' blockers. Alberta ended the set with a kill to put them up 2-0 in the match.

The two-time defending national champions looked the part in the third set, sprinting out to 6-1 lead. At 11-5 Shawn Sky had seen enough, calling a timeout. The Cougars brought it back to 15-11, capitalizing on some Alberta mistakes. The Golden Bears put the match away with a kill that just touched the fingertips of Grigor Kartev and sailed long.

Mount Royal falls to 4-2 on the season while the Golden Bears improve to a perfect 4-0 in Canada West regular season play.

Alberta will head home to face Saskatchewan for two matches next weekend beginning on Friday night.

Mount Royal board a plane for the first time this season as they have a date with the Manitoba Bisons. The Bisons and Cougars will clash at 6:00pm CST next Friday in Winnipeg.
