Box Score Calgary, AB – The Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 5-2 in a heated Sunday afternoon affair at Cougars Stadium Field. Moe Teliani, CJ Gilroy (2), Nikko Cuglietta and Stefan Bozunovic scored for the Golden Bears. Jake Vickers and Daylan Cato-Meyer tallied for the Cougars.
The Golden Bears didn't waste any time opening the scoring. In the 5th minute Tyrin Hutchings caught Moe Teliani with his hip in the middle of the box and Alberta was awarded the penalty. Teliani stepped up and caught rookie goaltender Shelby Parkinson moving the wrong way, giving Alberta the 1-0 lead.
In the 12th minute, Justin Anderson-Louch broke down the right side. The rookie delivered a beautiful pass to Daylan Cato-Meyer who knocked it just wide.
Alberta added to their lead in the 20th minute on a corner kick. Niko Saler swung a beautiful ball into the box into the box and CJ Gilroy got his head on it, depositing it into the bottom right corner of the goal.
The Cougars answered back in the 27th minute when Josh Cameron sent a hard pass to Jake Vickers. Vickers redirected the pass into the top right corner to cut the Golden Bears lead to one.
Just six minutes later Daylan Cato-Meyer scored his second of the season off a scramble in front. Cato-Meyer rang one off the post with his head but kept after the ball, burying a hard strike into the back of the net.
Before the Cougars could finish their celebration, Niko Saler took a free kick from distance and Nikko Cuglietta headed the ball home to restore Alberta's lead.
Shortly after the second half begun, Alberta scored again to regain their two-goal cushion. Niko Saler and CJ Gilroy connected again off a set piece. Saler flew another beautiful ball into the crease and CJ Gilroy buried yet another header for Alberta.
Stefan Bozunovic scored a late goal in injury time to cement the Golden Bears' victory.
Mount Royal finishes their regular season at 7-4-1, while Alberta improves to 8-2.
Alberta will play their final two games next weekend against Saskatchewan and Lethbirdge.
The Cougars will have a bye next weekend as they wait to find out who they play in the opening round Canada West playoffs.
