COUGARS THRASH THE GRIFFINS IN CANADA WEST DEBUTCalgary â€" A two goal performance by star midfielder
Cody Cook was enough to propel the Cougars over the MacEwan Griffins by a score of 4-0.
The Griffins saw firsthand the difference of play at the CIS level compared to the college ranks. Their high tempo pace and precision passing had the Cougars firmly in control of the match early.
In the 14
th minute Esu Yohannes of the Griffins collided with the Cougar's
Kyle Houston and hit the ground hard. The awkward fall left Esu grasping at what was suspected to be a broken collarbone. The game was halted for nearly 20 minutes as an ambulance was needed to treat the Griffin midfielder.
After a lengthy stoppage the Cougars were back on the attack, shooting from everywhere on the field. They finally broke the deadlock in the 29
th minute, when
Cody Cook took a ball off his chest and volleyed it into the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 going into the half.
As the second half began MacEwan was starting to get frustrated and started committing fouls. The Cougars promptly made them pay when Cook potted his second of the game in the 62
nd minute on a scramble in front of the net.
Connor Duthie scored his first career CIS goal in the 77
th minute on a beautiful ball from fellow rookie
Rory Torrance. The Griffins later committed an own goal to make the final 4-0.
These two squads will be back it on Sunday afternoon at 2:30pm at MRU Stadium Field.Â
