Cougars End Season with Another Tough Loss

Box Score

Calgary â€" The Mount Royal Cougars lost to the UNBC Timberwolves by a score of 86-79. Fifth years Mercedes VanKoughnett and Emily Kaehn each had strong outings to conclude their playing careers with the Timberwolves by scoring 22 and 20 points respectively. Danica Rybachuk led the way for the Cougars with 20 points. Jordan McLean was second in scoring on the Cougars with 13 points.

Both teams came out with a lot more jump in the first quarter compared to Friday night's game. Both teams exchanged a fair number of chances, and capitalized on a lot of their opportunities. Jordan McLean drained two free throws near the end of the quarter to give Mount Royal the lead, but Mavia Nijjar responded with a three pointer to put the Timberwolves up 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Early on in the second quarter Mount Royal was doing an excellent job of passing the ball around to find openings. Jordan McLean's three-pointer was an excellent example of this, as the Cougars moved the ball around until McLean was open for a wide-open shot. Mount Royal outscored UNBC early on 12-4, and Timberwolves coach Sergy Shchepotkina was forced to take a timeout to calm his troops down.

UNBC's players really responded timeout, and the Timberwolves came back, and tied up the game.  After a bit of back and forth play, Mercedes VanKoughnett's strong play helped UNBC go on a run to give them a nine point lead. Again, Mount Royal responded and scored 8 unanswered points to bring the score to 39-38 for UNBC going into the half.

The high scoring continued in the third quarter, and the Timberwolves were able to build a lead over the Cougars. Emily Kaehn was a big factor in UNBC 's high scoring quarter, as she personally put up 12 points in the quarter.

Going into the fourth quarter, UNBC had a seven-point lead over the Cougars. Throughout most of the quarter Mount Royal couldn't make any sizeable gains on UNBC's lead, and the Timberwolves started to extend the lead even further. Near the end of the fourth the Cougars started to crawl back into the game, but UNBC held strong and pulled off the 86-79 win.

The Cougars finish the season with a record of (2-19) and will finish in 8th place in the Pacific Division.

The Timberwolves are now (5-16) and will finish in 5th place in the Pacific Division.

Despite Mount Royal having a losing season, they will look to build off some of the positives going into next season. Alicia Tan had an outstanding rookie season, and will try to improve her game even more over the summer. The Cougars have a very young roster, and will to use the experience from this season to work towards being a better team next year.
