Thunderbirds Close Out Cougars in the Fourth

Calgary â€" The Mount Royal Cougars lost to the UBC Thunderbirds 67-55 tonight at Kenyon Court. Kris Young scored a game high 27 points for the Thunderbirds while teammate Harleen Sidhu scored 12. Carrie Campbell added 17 points for the Cougars.

The Thunderbirds started the game on a 16-8 run, putting the Cougars in a hole early. Mount Royal dug their heels in with some tough defense to keep the game from getting completely out of hand. The teams traded a few more points and the Cougars only trailed by six after the first quarter with score 22-16.

The second saw both teams become more cautious on the defensive side of the ball. The Cougars scored early to cut the lead to four but UBC kept driving the lane hard and earning free throws, which they converted, to extend the lead. The game then got sloppy as neither team could take care of the ball and turnovers slowed the pace of the game right down. At the half the Cougars trailed 37-28.

As the third quarter opened UBC ran out to a 6-2 run. From there it was all Cougars. Mount Royal scored the next eleven points to trail by just one bucket. Mount Royal and UBC then went ice cold, scoring only two points in a two minute window. UBC knocked down a basket followed by a quick three to close the quarter and the Cougars trailed 50-43.

The Cougars started leaking some oil in the fourth quarter. None of their shots could find the bottom of the basket and the Thunderbirds made them pay. UBC hit from everywhere down the final stretch and the Cougars just couldn't nail their open looks. Despite some last minute scoring the Cougars lost 67-55.

The loss drops the Mount Royal Cougars to 1-12 on the season. After the win the UBC Thunderbirds improves to 8-5.

These two teams will play the second half of their weekend set tomorrow evening at 5:00pm (MT).
