Saturday, February 16, 2013 - Prince George, B.C...The Mount Royal Cougars and the UNBC Timberwolves battled it out during their final game of the 2012-2013 season. The Cougars defense caused problems for the Timberwolves, forcing 10 turnovers in the first quarter.
Heading into the second quarter the Cougars had accumulated a 16-11 lead, which was shortly cut down by a sharp shooting Timberwolves around the perimeter. UNBC guard Jordyn Rabbitt (Salmon Arm, BC) went two for two from the three while fifth year Kady Dandeneau (Pender Island, BC) added one of her own. Dandeneau's three-pointer put the Timberwolves ahead 25-23 with six minutes until the half. UNBC built up steam as the quarter progressed, outscoring Mount Royal 5-0 in the final minute of the second to end the half with a 43-33 lead.
The Cougars continued to force UNBC errors, creating turnovers and unconverted possessions but they were not able to capitalize. Shooting only 28% from the field, Mount Royal was struggling to get a basket.
After a dramatic increase in scoring for the Timberwolves in the second quarter (32 points) the playing field evened out again in the third. Both teams netted fewer than 20 points to finish off the third quarter 61-47 in favour of the Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter. Defensively solid, UNBC forced multiple scoreless possessions from the Cougars. Leading the defensive charge from the Timberwolves was fifth year Kady Dandeneau (Pender Island, BC). Dandeneau kept the Cougars scoring inside to a minimum and forced three turnovers. At the final whistle the Timberwolves finished 76-63 ahead of the Cougars.
The Cougars were led by the fourth year guard
Lisa Ivanics (Foremost, AB), and fifth year forward
Annalise Posein (Okotoks, AB). Ivanics came off the bench to score 12 points for the Cougars Posein added 11, the majority in the final 10 minutes.
The Timberwolves finished with four players in double-digits, Jordyn Rabbitt (Salmon Arm, BC), Kady Dandeneau (Pender Island, BC), Mercedes VanKoughnett (Prince George, BC), and Jennifer Bruce (Langley, BC). Rabbitt and VanKoughnett put up 10 apiece, while Dandeneau added 15 and Bruce topped scoring with 17.
Both the Mount Royal Cougars and the UNBC Timberwolves have concluded their 2012-2013 season. The two teams will look to increase their successes next year as they enter into their second year within the Canada West conference.
