Saturday, October 20, 2012 - Calgary, AB...The University of Northern British Columbia men's soccer team should pray for snow every day, since they mustered their first win of the Canada West season on a white field Saturday, 3-0 over the host Mount Royal University Cougars.
Daniel Dell, Cheona Edzerza and Ahmed Hamour scored for the Timberwolves.
The Timberwolves and Cougars are both in their first seasons in Canadian Interuniversity Sports. The Timberwolves are coached by Calgarian Alan Alderson and entered Saturday sporting a 0-12 record. The team now improves to 1-12.
The Cougars are 4-8-1. They close out their season on the road next weekend against the University of Victoria and Trinity Western University.
“It's very disappointing because we had our chances early and looked very good early and got a little bit frustrated and allowed them the opportunity to get back into the game,” offered Cougars head coach Jamie Pollock.
“When they did we didn't respond as well as I would have hoped. Then, when the conditions worsened we couldn't solve the problem and find the solution.”
The start of the contest was delayed by two hours because of Calgary's first blast of winter weather, which actually left the match in doubt. Parents, other volunteers and MRU staff members grabbed shovels and cleared as much off the field as possible prior to the start of the women's contest between Mount Royal University and the University of Manitoba, which preceded the men's game.
Cody Cook had two good chances to get the Cougars on the board first but was stopped. Dell then found the net in the 17th minute. Edzerza scored in the 46 minute and Hamour in the 54th.
“(The Timberwolves) were coming in not having any results all season but they worked hard and were always competing,” Pollock said.
“I think if we had done our job early — because we had our chances and didn't bury them — we would have taken the fight out of them. But we allowed them to start to believe.”
UNBC continues their road trip heading to Winnipeg to play the Wesmen at 12:00 p.m. while the Cougars won't return to the pitch until the Oct. 26-27 weekend.
