First CIS Win

Box Score Saturday, October 13, 2012 - Calgary, AB...The Mount Royal University Cougars got their first on-field win in Canada West men's soccer on Saturday — 3-2 over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. It came in dramatic fashion and with much controversy.

Cody Cook tied the game on a questionable penalty kick in injury time and Josh Doiron converted Cook's corner kick shortly thereafter to leave the Cougars jumping up and down in celebration and the Pronghorns shaking their heads in disbelief.

The Cougars are now 3-7-1 while the Pronghorns drop to 3-3-4. Mount Royal was awarded two wins earlier this season when an opponent self-declared that it had used an ineligible player during a two-game series.

Tyler Boast took the loss in net for Lethbridge, making four saves, while Kamil Zielinski was impressive in the win, making nine saves.

The teams' play again Sunday at Mount Royal Fields at 2 p.m.

“We showed character today. We were up and we were down. We just didn't stop and we got the result. Everyone's happy with it,” said Cook.

Regardless of whether the penalty kick was warranted or not, the Cougars celebrated their first on-field victory in their first season in Canadian Interuniversity Sports play. Mount Royal moved up from the college ranks prior to this season.

“Today we did the things we need to do to have success,” Cougars head coach Jamie Pollock said.

“We have to trust that it will come. This is the first game where we trusted that all the way through. We took some chances and managed to get one.”

The decision to award a penalty kick drew a large crowd of upset Pronghorns around the referee, who decided a Cougar had been pushed inside the 18-yard box.

“Honestly, I don't think it was a penalty,” Pollock admitted.

“We caught a break. To our credit we took advantage of it and we kept pushing and managed to get another one.”

The Cougars struck first in the 28th minute. Cook blasted a shot past Tyler Boast, a native of Calgary, from about 30 yards out.

Cook had a goal taken away on an offside call seven minutes earlier. He headed Gustavo Becerra's free kick into the Pronghorns goal.

The Pronghorns drew even in the 41st minute. Scott Slomp duplicated Miller's disallowed goal with a header past goalkeeper Kamil Zielinski off a free kick. The difference, though, was that he was deemed onside.

Lethbridge scored again in extra time before the break. A free kick was stopped by the Cougars' wall, but it came free to Matt Medoruma and he footed the ball into the bottom left corner.

The three goals matches the Cougars' total team output through their previous 10 games.

After today the Cougars will prepare to close out their home schedule against the University of Northern British Columbia on Oct. 20. While U of L hosts the University of Alberta for a pair of games on Oct.20-21.
