Mount Royal University Athletics is celebrating four individuals with deep connections to the Cougars who have been recognized as members of the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame.

Leading the group is Karla Karch, Mount Royal's current Director of Athletics and Recreation, who was inducted in the Player category and as a member of the 2009 U17 Women's Canada Summer Games Gold Medalist Team.

A Calgary basketball standout, Karch began her post-secondary career at the University of Calgary before transferring to the University of Victoria. She went on to win four CIAU medals, including a national championship in 1987, along with two Canada West titles. Karch was named a Canada West First Team All-Star and Second Team All-Canadian in her final university season.

Karch became a fixture with Team Canada for more than a decade, appearing in more than 150 international games and representing her country at the Pan American Games, FIBA World Championships and the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. She also enjoyed a successful professional career overseas, winning championships with clubs in Germany and Hungary. Today, she brings that extensive basketball and high-performance experience to her role leading Cougars Athletics.
The Mount Royal connection to the Hall of Fame recognition extends across multiple generations of Cougars basketball.

Doug Baker was inducted in the Builder category after a decorated playing career that began with the Mount Royal Cougars. The Calgary native was an ACAC First-Team All-Star in 1971-72 before continuing his playing career at the University of Alberta. Baker later dedicated more than three decades to coaching and athlete development and served as executive director of Basketball Alberta, playing a significant role in growing the sport throughout the province.

Tom Bishop, inducted in the Player category, also began his post-secondary career at Mount Royal College before becoming a standout with the University of Calgary. Bishop earned Canada West First Team All-Star and CIAU First Team All-Canadian honours in 1975-76 and went on to represent Canada at numerous international competitions, including the 1978 World Championship and 1979 Pan-American Games. He was also named to the 1980 Canadian Olympic men's basketball roster.

Jack Kenyon, inducted in the Coach category, helped establish Mount Royal as one of the most successful programs in Alberta college basketball history. During his tenure as head coach, the Cougars compiled an incredible 198-26 record, won seven ACAC championships and captured the 1979 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championship. His legacy continues at Mount Royal today, with the Cougars playing on Kenyon Court and the university awarding the Jack Kenyon Memorial Scholarship.

Karch, Baker, Bishop and Kenyon represent decades of Mount Royal basketball history and the lasting impact of the Cougars program. Their recognition in the Alberta Basketball Hall of Fame celebrates accomplishments that have extended far beyond the Mount Royal court, while highlighting the university's longstanding role in developing athletes, coaches and leaders who have helped shape basketball in Alberta and across Canada.
