The 2–11 Mount Royal Cougars hosted the 5–9 Winnipeg Wesmen at home on Saturday night. The Cougars were looking to bounce back after a tough loss the night before, while Winnipeg aimed to complete the weekend sweep.
Winnipeg's Ella Werbiski and Brooke Duncalfe carried their momentum from Friday's match, combining for seven of the Wesmen's first nine kills of the night.
MRU's
Bronwynn Davies-Neira kept the Cougars in the fight, adding four kills of her own, but the Wesmen held a slim two-point lead at 16–14.
Winnipeg continued to extend their advantage to as many as six points and went on to take the first set 25–19. Duncalfe led the way for the Wesmen with seven kills in the opening frame.
The Wesmen carried their early success into the second set, opening on a 7–1 run. Duncalfe remained dominant, pushing the lead as high as nine points at 20–11.
The Cougars sparked a comeback of their own, cutting the deficit to five and forcing Winnipeg to take a timeout.
Both teams traded points down the stretch, but the Wesmen ultimately took the set 25–20. Outside hitter Megan Kendziora came up with key blocks late to help Winnipeg edge out the Cougars.
Winnipeg carried their momentum into the third set, opening with a 6–0 run and quickly building a 9–3 lead.
The Wesmen continued to pull away, extending their advantage to nine points at 20–11, fueled by strong performances from Duncalfe and Kendziora.
MRU's
Aurora Bentrim did all she could for a struggling Cougars squad, finishing with 10 kills on the night and cutting the deficit to five at 21–16, prompting a Winnipeg timeout.
Cougars middle blocker
Mya Morgan delivered a strong cross-court kill to make it 24–19, but the Wesmen held strong to close out the third set and complete the straight-sets sweep on the road.
