CALGARY – A massive offensive outburst from the Mount Royal University Cougars men's hockey team gave them a 5-1 victory over the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday evening at Flames Community Arena.
In Friday night's game, Mount Royal was quick to get on board. In Saturday's rematch, the Cougars matched their energy with another early goal.
Less than three minutes into the game,
Jaxon Martens potted one past Alberta netminder Ethan Barwick to make it 1-0 for Mount Royal.
The goal was Martens first since last year's season opener.
Almost exactly halfway through the period, the Cougars added another.
Teague Patton pounced on a rebound that originated from
Layton Feist's point shot. Patton whacked the puck into a gaping cage, doubling MRU's lead with 10 minutes left in the opening frame.
Patton had a magnificent chance to get his second of the period when he was propelled on a breakaway but was shut down by Barwick.
The hot start was exactly what the Cougars needed after a frustrating 7-4 loss on Friday.
Mount Royal extended their lead with another tally in the second period.
Josh Tarzwell continued his hot streak, grabbing another point with a superb pass over to
Vaughn Watterodt who converted a beautiful two-on-one.Â
Watterodt got his second of the game minutes later with a four-on-four goal, extending the Cougars advantage to a suffocating 4-0 score.
The second year forward feels like he's settled into Canada West hockey and isn't trying to do too much.
"I tried to keep it simple today," said Watterodt. "I think I play my best when I keep it simple and just try to do whatever I can to help us win tonight."
Fellow former Saskatoon Blade
Justin Lies snapped his eight game goalless drought in spectacular fashion, letting a howitzer of a slapshot go from the point and going bardown to make it five for Mount Royal in just the first two periods.Â
The Golden Bears finally got on the board late in the second with a powerplay marker. Rookie forward Owen Pederson tucked in a loose puck under the pad of MRU goalie
Riley Sims to make it 5-1.
Pederson's goal would be the last one of the contest and both teams went scoreless in the third period.Â
With the win Mount Royal stayed unbeaten on Saturdays even though they are yet to win a Friday game this season.Â
MRU's Watterodt voiced his pleasure with the Cougars bounce-back effort and thought that the team's display on today was much closer to what the team's identity is.
"We're a lot more like the team on Saturday's," said Watterodt after the 5-1 win. "Adversity is good for us and I think it will be better for our group in the long run. Obviously, Fridays haven't gone our way but we've been able to bounce back on Saturdays and that's going to be important come February."
