The 2–7 Mount Royal Cougars looked to bounce back against the 3–8 Regina Cougars on Saturday night, aiming to avoid the weekend sweep on home court.
MRU's Sydney Scatcherd, coming off a 15-kill performance on Friday, earned her first one early. Some service trouble from MRU kept Regina in it, while Jordy McEachern was looking to continue her stellar weekend and help her squad get another road win.
Regina held the advantage through most of the first frame, as MRU saw themselves down three points late by a score of 18-15. Bronwynn Davies-Neira provided the much needed late-set spark, turning what looked like a free Regina point into a point of MRU's own and cutting the deficit to 20-19. Setter Cassadi Klapak answered back with a trick play of her own putting her team up 24-22, not long before a big McEachern block closed the first set of action in favour of Regina, 25-22.
Regina came out strong in the second set with McEachern helping her team to an early 14-7 lead, before MRU's Raven Ogbodu stopped the bleeding with two back-to-back kills for MRU making the score 15-9. MRU demonstrated their resiliency, but Regina managed to keep them at bay taking the second set 25-18.
The away team continued their dominance in the third set, Regina maintaining a consistent lead through most of the frame leading 19-11 late in this one. Klapak was everywhere on the court for Regina, with 18 assists on the night while also contributing nine digs.
A late push by MRU cut the lead to a score of 23-18, forcing Regina to call a timeout. The home team showed promise, but McEachern shut down any hopes of a possible comeback for MRU helping Regina take the set 25-19. McEachern led the game with 14 kills on the night.
Regina wins in straight sets 3-0, moving to a record of 4-8 heading into the winter break.
MRU heads into the break with a much needed reset in mind, looking to bounce back in the second half of the season.
