WSOC: Cougars onto the semifinals after historical playoff win at home

Cougars get the comeback win 2-1 against the Heat in quarter-final match

Another perfect day for Canada West playoffs in Calgary at Field #2 of Mount Royal University as the Cougars get home field advantage and host the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat in this quarter-final match up. It was sunny with a bit of a breeze, at about 12 degrees to start the game.

The Cougars and Heat are creating offence in any way they can. With the back-and-forth momentum throughout the first minutes of the game. In the 25th minute of the game the Heat have possession Annabelle Walker has the ball in the right corner of the field; she sends a shot on net. Ella Filek gets the initial block with a diving save. Abigail Taneda is right there to get the rebound, while Filek is out of place after the diving block, and Taneda taps the ball in the net, the Heat go up 1-0.

The Cougars are applying the pressure to try to get within one, after coming of the bench Dany Juarez is making her presence known by generating opportunities. Heat keeper, Talia Gagnon and the Heat defence are shutting down the chances.

Toward the end of the first half Walker is trying to get the Heat another goal, Filek is there with the stop this time, as the Heat generate chances in the keepers box, the Cougars defence keeps this a 1-0 game.

Into the second half the Cougars are trying to get something set up, Heat defence is doing their best to defend, with some key plays by Rowan MacPherson. Cougars captain; Isabella Chirico is keeping the Cougars calm while trying to get some plays going.

With a corner kick attempt for the Cougars Tamara Djurisic tries to attack right off the kick, but Gagnon has the save. In the Cougars end the Heat are generating some action, Kyla Franks is able to make a key defensive play to put a stop to their offensive energy. With the Heat gaining some traction, Maria Georgacacos is speeding down the field with defenders on either side of her, Filek comes out to make the aggressive save.

With the Cougars applying pressure and trying to get anything going offensively for the home team, Djurisic is trying to just get the ball on net. Countering the pressure by the Cougars, Taneda takes the ball down the left side of the field, fending off Cougars defenders and sends a shot on net, with Filek there for the save.

With a corner kick by Drjuisic, Gagnon gets the save up right away, with the rebound the Cougars have something brewing, with Caitlyn Vieira trying to send the ball up to a charging Darian Pluhator. With the Cougars getting something going, the Heat take a foul and Djurisic is set up with a free kick. She ties the game with a goal in the top right corner of the net. The Cougars have tied up with game in the 76th minute.

Both teams' seasons hang in the balance with around 13 minutes remaining in regulation time. The With the Cougars keeping play in their attacking zone, the Heat are trying to get the ball past half,
the Cougars send the ball up to a speedy Dany Juarez, but she is forced to the end of the field and gets a short shot up. Djurisic gets another hard shot out, but Gagnon gets the big save.

With the Heat finally in their attacking zone, their trying to calm the play down. Cougars end up bringing the ball through half, Analisa Galvez sends the ball to Darian Phulator, she's set up in front of the Cougars bench and she sends a long shot on net, just out of the reach of Gagnon, and get the Cougars up 2-1 in the 88th minute. The Cougars keep the pressure on and get the comeback win.

The Cougars are onto BC for the semifinal and taking on either the University of Saskatchewan Huskies or the University of British Thunderbirds. The Cougars were looking to make history today, with winning a playoff game at home.

Cougars captain Isabella Chirico said after the game about having home field advantage, "We kind of know Calgary weather a little bit better than Kelowna weather they also use turf. That's another reason why we wanted to play on the grass this weekend." Highlighting the fact that stadium field in still under construction but was almost an advantage this weekend. Chirico pumped her team up with not much to say pre-game today with "I said one word to them in the changing room earlier and I said history. We're making history today. I don't care what it takes." The Cougars captain led them
to history on Field #2 today.
