Box Score WSOC - The Mount Royal University women's soccer team hosted the Saskatchewan Huskies on a sunny fall Saturday afternoon at Stadium Field. Mount Royal entered the match with a 6-1 record and was looking to bounce back after suffering its first loss of the season to the University of Calgary Dinos last weekend. Saskatchewan, came into the matchup with a 5-2-1 record and looked to build on its momentum after defeating the Regina Cougars 7-1 last Sunday.
Both teams came out with early pressure, with Saskatchewan's third-year forward Danielle Lehmann and fourth-year midfielder Jenna Steacy creating chances for the Huskies. Third-year goalkeeper Ella Filek made several key saves to keep Saskatchewan off the scoresheet, while fourth-year defender Siddaly Alcock was especially strong defensively for MRU throughout the opening half.
Cougars first-year forward Brooke Miller nearly opened the scoring with a powerful strike from inside the box, but Huskies second-year goalkeeper Alyssa Paydli stood her ground to deny the chance. Saskatchewan would respond with a dangerous opportunity of its own, but Filek came up with a big save on fifth-year forward Cheyenne Lehmann to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.
The second half began much like the first, with both teams battling for possession and neither side able to generate a clear-cut scoring opportunity. The match remained tightly contested, with both defences keeping the opposing attack in check through the opening stages of the half. Cougars fourth-year midfielder Tamara Djurisic nearly broke the deadlock with a shot that sailed just over the net.
Neither side could find a breakthrough in the final stages, as Mount Royal and Saskatchewan played to a 0-0 draw at Stadium Field. MRU will return to Stadium Field on Sunday to host the Regina Cougars, while Saskatchewan will travel across town to take on the Calgary Dinos.
Player of the Game: #19 Siddaly Alcock, who provided strong defensive leadership for the Cougars throughout the match, organizing the back line and making several key plays for MRU.Â
