Calgary, AB — MRU's women's basketball team welcomed back The University of Calgary Dinos for the second installment of a Crowchild Classic on Saturday night. The Cougars put up a great battle but fell short against their cross-town rivals, 60-41.
Dinos' Friday night player of the game, Myriam Kone, broke open the scoring in Saturday's rematch with a jumper for 2 points. Notably, Mya Proctor was a huge help for the Dinos in the 1st period as Proctor scored 10 points and made 1 block.
Hayley Lalor picked up a quick 5 points within the last few minutes of the 1st period. H. Lalor scored a big triple at the top of the arc, then soon after finished with a transition layup. Amelia Collin finished the quarter with a three-pointer just a couple seconds before the buzzer. The score was 11-19, for the Dinos.
The Cougars went on a scoring run off of three back-to-back steals.
Nora Luca,
Temi Ajayi, and H. Lalor all went to cash in 6 points under 30 seconds. These efforts by the Cougars cut down their lead to within 2 points, 17-19. This posed a barrier to a Dinos offense as they were scoreless for almost the first 4 minutes of the second period. Kone and Collin got the Dinos back onto the scoreboard after knocking down 5 points in under a minute, forcing the Cougars to call a timeout. Lilia Skumatova's triple and Collin's two made free throws pushed the Dinos up to an 11 point lead just under 2 minutes before halftime, 33-22. Luca muscled her way through to the rim and finished with a layup, earning 7 points in the first half. Kourtney Oss secured the last points of the first half, a three-pointer, to keep the Dinos up by 8 points, 36-24.
Returning from the half, both teams came off the whistle with intense defense. This led to a rather low scoring third period. The Dinos were able to find an offensive run as their biggest stretch was 9 points. The Cougars faced some problems in the third period as they were held to only 6 points.
In the fourth quarter, the Dinos and Cougars continued to hold onto each others' strong defenses. However, the Dinos had more success in the paint to continue extending their lead.
Maddy Hooper concluded the last shot tonight with a corner three, leaving 0.2 seconds left. Both teams scored 11 points in the final period. The Dinos came out with a 60-41 win over the Cougars.
Mya Proctor and
Nora Luca were tonight's players of the game. Proctor scored 16 points, while Luca earned 12 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 assists.
